We all want beautiful skin. Preferably without making too much effort or giving up chocolate. We’re all looking for the perfect product when what we actually need is a more holistic approach. You are what you eat, and your skin health is a reflection of your internal health. Of course, this is not the way to sell products, but if your aim is healthy skin, not an over-stocked bathroom, then that doesn’t matter.
Everyone’s skin works basically the same way. It protects our insides and helps us regulate temperature. It also allows us to feel the world outside of us. An average patch of skin, the size of your bankcard, contains 600 sweat glands, 20 blood vessels, and more than 1000 nerve endings! If you’re trying to find the right skin care routine for you, you need to understand the basic truths of skincare that most skin care companies won’t tell you:
- Everyone’s skin reacts differently. What works for someone else might or might not work for you.
- Aging is normal and beautiful and something to be embraced as a sign of wisdom and experience – not battled against. If you die looking 5, 10, or 20 years younger than someone else, you’re still dead. If you spend your life obsessing over how old you look, or whether you look younger than someone else, you will never be satisfied, and that’s a terribly sad waste of the time that you have.
- Our skin needs to be fed from the inside and the outside. If we’re feeding it junk food from either or both of these directions, it’s going to show. Maybe not immediately but it will. Also, good food can have a huge impact on how our skin ages, in a way that $300 anti-ageing wrinkle creams can not.
- Those ads are photoshopped. No one, (not even the women in the ads themselves) looks like that.
- Oils on your skin are not your enemy. Your body makes sebum, an oil-like substance to protect and heal your skin. The right oils or fats will help your skin heal and repair. Oils make great cleansers, moisturisers and sealants.
And the best bit is that these truths lead to some good news:

When you’re choosing skin care products, choose a simple routine with natural ingredients you can identify. Learn what works for your skin and hair, and don’t believe the too-good-to-be-true claims of skincare companies. Save your $300 for good food and a walk in the fresh air.
